Just because I’m Paranoid……
Or Playing the “What if” game.

By Will

Before I got back into riding many years ago, I spent some time asking more experienced riders for advice. Well you can imagine the plethora of more colorful and smart ass answers I got. There was a couple however that was useful. The two I thought to be most helpful were to take the MSF course, which I did. The other was to always be playing the “what if” game or as I like to call it “just because I’m paranoid, doesn’t mean that they’re not really out to get me”. Other than the time a road captain told me I “turn like crap on a roller skate” after I took one that went a little wide (OK a lot wide) the “what if” game stuck in my mind.

Here is how you play. Pretend that when you are riding on the mean streets of SO FLO that every single car, bus, and van on every road on every day is out to get you. Pretend that they are looking for any excuse and opportunity to turn you into a 600 pound, two wheeled pin ball. Oh sure they will try and make it seem like an accident (which is the only thing that keeps me from going completely insane). This exercise in mental health (or illness) is easy to do in town or on our many back roads. Now, unlike the wonderful MSF course that teaches us to watch out for those hidden driveways, oncoming cages and crossroads, this is a whole different level of mistrust. In my world I’m always thinking about who can hit me, and then calculate the odds of them being successful at doing so, and then plan my escape. Then I plan how they will atone for their transgressions, but that is for another article. It’s all part of being paranoid. I try to know what they are going to do before they do. Welcome to Will’s World!! OK you say “now what”. Should you too obsess about every devious driveway, crazed cager, bumbling bus driver, bone headed bicyclist, deranged dog, deadly Deer, dive bombing bird (this one actually happened) and that schizophrenic, sociopath, suicidal squirrel that we have read about recently? Or how about this scenario, the ride leader (I won’t mention myself by name) has to stop short because the car in front of him has a hallucination at a green light. The result is that everyone has to stop so short that I get from the guy behind me an unscheduled Prostate exam. Now if that person happens to be Topcat, and since we are both of Polish decent, we may actually be married in some small village by Polish law.  Just thinking of that is enough to make a person park their bike for a very long time and take up skateboarding.

Relax, as they say in AA “you can only control so much” (no I’m not a member). Luckily humans have an incredible ability to process and prioritize the world around us. We all can observe our environments, interact with it, and refine our actions within the blink of an eye or the electric firing of a synapse. The more we play the “what if” game, the better we get at it. Now I should say that if you are just beginning your adventures in riding, just stick to the wonderful stuff they teach at the MSF course. The fundamentals will serve you well until you are ready for the next level of paranoia.  For the rest of us paranoid Cruisers, lets’s talk about some of the things what we can do. First, belonging to a club like the PB Knights is probably the best thing you can do. In the world of motorcycling there truly is safety in numbers. When cars see a pack of 10 bikers coming their way, I promise they will see us. You also have the advantage of having members with many years of varied experiences. That is a well of information that should be drawn from often. Next, while you can’t control the fast and furious pace that these challenges come at you, you can control your pace. Reducing your speed by as little as 3-5 mph allows your mind vast amounts of additional time to process things. Unconsciously this allows your body to relax and be more responsive. Of course this also depends on the kind of road you are on. When riding in denser traffic, it is usually a good idea to roll back just a bit.  On the other hand, when braving our interstates and turnpike you’ll want to keep up with the traffic flow. On highways, cars may have a harder time judging your speed and position so keeping up with the pace is safer. Of course you can still worry about Deer, Armadillos, night riding, oil slicks, untold amounts of road debris, people throwing cigarettes out the window, and anything else you want to keep you at that healthy level of paranoia. Of course it doesn’t hurt to keep the club’s lawyer phone number handy.

Your Brother,
Zev

We started off the month with Topcat organizing a great bike night at Hooters. The weather was perfect for a get together and a we had a good showing. It was good to see new Knights and some old friends that I've missed!! The scenery was.....well, very attractive!! The food wasn't bad either. The group was awesome.

David Rey said "Great night. Met a few new Knights today. Looking to patch up real soon"

Ed Gonzalez " Had a very good time, see you soon..."

Saturday Night with the Knights

"Will it's so @#$%ing HOT!!!" So, let's have a night ride!! What a ride it was. We got to watch the Sunset, on great back roads and along the beach. We got to meet new Knights and had just a wonderful time. Maybe just to make Buzzcap& happy we will do it again.... It was really good to have Dale "Joker" back with us!!

Mike Quinn ".Excellent time. Appreciate everyone's kindness and making us feel welcome. We needed that ride a social interaction bad. Things get pretty boring around here at the nursing home..."

Mark "BuzzCap7" "EXCELLENT!! EXCELLENT!! EXCELLENT!!! AND, to see all the new guy/gals riding with us and with FANTASTIC personalities, <-- this is MORE and MORE of what makes going thru life SO MUCH FUN!!! (In my humble opinion.)Quality people!!! LOVE YOU ALL!!! BC7"

Jorge (Stix) Posada "My favorite ride since I joined the PBK!!! Loved the sunset and the place we ate too"

Dale Goldstein "Great ride, nice folks......BuzzCap best hug of 2016, I'll be back for more."

Richard Eames "Great friends! Great ride! Great food! It
doesn't get any better than that! "

Anna Nylander " Food was great, ride was fabulous, and everyone was just amazing. We all know what to say to Will thanx "

Roland Martins Marina in Clewiston

This is a great biker hang out with good food and great atmosphere. While it is hot when not in the wind, it's not too bad when you're moving. It was great to meet our newest Knight Mike Choiniere. We had a nice stop at John Stretch Park on the way, and everyone was home before any big rain. We missed most of the rain, only got 3 minutes on the way home....cooled me off nicely.

Michael A Choiniere "Great to have met everyone and thanks for all the info guys"

Scott Garringer "Well it was another good ride with good people. Thanks Will "

Mike Quinn said "Outstanding "

Topcat organized a meetup at the West Palm HD bike night. I have to say it was very enjoyable, even if I was surrounded by Harleys. Saw some I wouldn't mind having!! It was a little hot, but still good to just hang with the Knights. I even got the wife to ride with me.

Richard Eames said "Great to see everyone! "

Mark "BuzzCap7" "said Like normal...............FANTASTIC!!! ALWAYS GREAT!!!!
Except this time Will could NOT get naked since Susan was here. THANK YOU SUSAN!!!!! Phew.......... LOL! I so funi!

Baseball at Roger Dean Stadium

Well I made sure to check the weather all during the day and before I left the house. The weather was clear with a 10% chance of rain and nothing on the radar. On my way to the meetup spot....I got soaked by a down pour!! Oh well, it's just water and I dried. I was join by Dale "Joker" and Scott " Sin Slayer" and we waited it out for awhile. We got to the Ball park  just as they were singing the National Anthem. Once we got a Beer, we met up with Buzzcap7 and his lovely wife. I have to say $7 for sitting right behind Home plate in box seat was just great. Small Ball Park let's you sit very close to the player and get to see every pitch....awesome. The rain cooled things off, and we didn't get another drop. What a great night!

Dale Goldstein Said "Very nice setting, great seats, and quality baseball"

Mark "BuzzCap7" GOOD place. Mostly because they have Belgium White Shock Top beer and when I left, our team was winning. HAH!!! Either way........GOOD place!!

Scott Garringer said "Dam good game s/s"

Ok Corral Gun Club

We had a great turn out for this event. Welcome to our newest Knight Dale Blanton!! On the way there we took some favorite back roads and had smooth sailing. While the weather was hot, that is what ya get in Florida in July!! The place was great as always. The people there are very friendly and know how to treat their customers. It was Irish Mike's first go at Gunner for us and he did a perfect job. The Knights brought an arsenal with us. Just about every kind of gun was represented...some I'd never seen before. After, some of us stayed around for a very tasty lunch. The ride back was going great until I got a call from my wife who was about 8 miles in front of us. We hit a pretty good storm in Indian Town, so we pulled into a parking lot and just waited it out. Took about 15 minutes and we were on our way. 5 minutes later we were on dry roads again. All in all a great day.

Jorge (Stix) Posada said "Awesome shooting range!!! Staff, food and shooting were all great!! Thanks to Will and your wife for letting me shoot your guns and for all the tips!

Ed Gonzalez said "Wonderful Day out on the Ranch, and the sprinkles felt good...."
