Monthly Newsletter November

Greetings from your President   Will

I hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving!!
I am so thankful for the friends I have made in this club. I'm always proud to say I am part of The Palm Beach Knights MRC!!

Oh, and Happy Chanukah too!!

In honor of Roscoe's November, I've replaced my usual article with a chili story. I did not write this, but, when I read it I laughed so hard I cried.

New Mexico Chili Cook off
If you can read this whole story without laughing, then there's no hope for you. This is an actual account as relayed to paramedics at a chili cook-off in New Mexico..

Note: Please take time to read this slowly.
If you pay attention to the first two judges,
The reaction of the third judge is even better.

For those of you who have lived in New Mexico , you know how true this is. They actually have a Chili Cook-off about the time Halloween comes around. It takes up a major portion of a parking lot at the Santa Fe Plaza .. Judge #3 was an inexperienced Chile taster named Frank, who was visiting from Springfield , IL ..

Please let me introduce myself....

'Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table, asking for directions to the Coors Light truck, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Native New Mexicans) that the chili wouldn't be all that spicy; and, besides, they told me I could have Free beer during the tasting, so I accepted and became '

'Judge #3.'

Here are the scorecard notes from the event:

CHILI # 1 - MIKE'S MANIAC MONSTER CHILI

Judge # 1 -- A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.
Judge # 2 -- Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.

Judge # 3 (Frank) -- Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that's the worst one. These New Mexicans are crazy.

CHILI # 2 - EL RANCHO'S AFTERBURNER CHILI

Judge # 1 -- Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang.
Judge # 2 -- Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.

Judge # 3 -- Keep this out of the reach of children. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.

CHILI # 3 - ALFREDO'S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN CHILI

Judge # 1 -- Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick.
Judge # 2 -- A bit salty, good use of peppers.

Judge # 3 -- Call the EPA. I've located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I'm getting sh*t-faced from all of the beer.

CHILI # 4 - BUBBA'S BLACK MAGIC
Judge # 1 -- Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.
Judge # 2 -- Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.

Judge # 3 -- I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This 300 lb. Woman is starting to look HOT ... Just like this nuclear waste I'm eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac?

CHILI # 5 - LISA'S LEGAL LIP REMOVER
Judge # 1 -- Meaty, strong chili. Jalapeno peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive..
Judge # 2 -- Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the jalapeno peppers make a strong statement.

Judge # 3 -- My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I'm burning my lips off. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw them.

CHILI # 6 - VARGA'S VERY VEGETARIAN VARIETY

Judge # 1 -- Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers.
Judge # 2 -- The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb.

Judge # 3 -- My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted,it's all that BEER and Chili. I'm worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Sally. Can't feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.

CHILI # 7 - SUSAN'S SCREAMING SENSATION CHILI

Judge # 1 -- A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.
Judge # 2 -- Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment. **I should take note that I am worried about Judge #3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.

Judge # 3 -- You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn't feel a thing. I've lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of smelly lava.At least during the autopsy, they'll know what killed me. I've decided to stop breathing. It's too painful. Screw it; I'm not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I'll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach, burned by all that CHILI! OMG! one more taste coming up!

CHILI # 8 - BIG TOM'S 'TOENAIL' CURLING CHILI

Judge # 1 -- The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Judge # 2 -- This final entry is a good, balanced chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor fella, wonder how he'd have reacted to really Hot Chili?

Judge # 3 -- No Report!!!.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE ORGANIZER AND OFFICERS WORK HARD TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A FUN SAFE RIDE. WHILE WE WELCOME SUGGESTIONS, WE WON'T CHANGE RIDES THE WEEK OF THAT RIDE.
I'M SURE THAT THEY WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ANY IDEAS FOR A FUTURE EVENT.

While we try to mix up our rides as much as possible, it's highly unlikely that I'm going to please everyone all the time. I hope everyone has been enjoying the rides that  have been on our schedule so far. I am always looking for feedback and new ideas. Your participation is what makes this club great.

We have been having some really awesome rides:

REMEMBERING OUR HEROES

We joined some friends from other clubs, -Hollywood Motorcycle Riders- Southern Cruisers 101- and other to help honor our Vets.  After we had a nice lunch  at Mrs. Smokey’s in WPB, we made our way over to the VA where we had the honor of meeting some of the vets. It truly was a great experience. As a plus, all the Knights that attended WON RAFFLE PRIZES!!! Man you should have seen the faces of the other clubs when they kept calling our names. A big thanks goes out to our new member "Buzzcap " for making a very nice donation.

Larry & Martha-said
"Great ride Will! Enjoyed meeting and riding with friendly riders, including yourself. :)"

Roscoe's Chili Challenge weekend.

Somehow just saying we had a great time doesn't just do it justice. Perfect weather on nice roads with my best friends can't be put into words. It was a great time. There is nothing like Roscoe's. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure is worth experiencing it at least once.

This year I came back a changed man....permanently!! As an extra added bonus, some Knights got to see me in a lot of pain as I got a tribute tattoo for my wife Sue.

Keith Baldwin- said
"What a fantastic trip. Special thanks to Will for all the planning and Gunner for coming thru on the local navigation (even though Lisa was taking credit). I'm looking forward to seeing Paul's documentary!"

Casa Tequila Mexican Grill

This was a little longer ride to Lake Placid to one of the best Tex Mex restaurants.
Some really nice easy roads and a great twisty road that ends way too soon right before we got to the restaurant.
We were a little adventurous and took a different way back to 70 and got to see some of the Lake. Nice to have Larry and Martha join us for their first ride.

paul manna-Said
"great ride, great weather, great food, great friends....what else could you ask for?"

Archie's Seabreeze

We had the pleasure of having some of the SCRC 101 join us on this ride. 2 of which are members of the Knights. Great ride down some picturesque roads. Some of us hit some rain on the way back, but overall a nice day. The food was even good!!

Neal Alvanos Said
"Surprisingly a decent place with good food and service. Got home just before the heavy downpour."

Pilot House Key Largo

We had a very nice turn out for this ride. Thank you Greenie for planning it. Tim joined us for breakfast st the Cracker Barrel. Slick had planned to join us, but at breakfast discovered a leak on his bike and had to cancel to take care of it. (hope it was no big deal)
The ride up was all highway, but everyone rode great. The keys are always a pretty ride. The Pilot house had good food and great scenery.
The ride home had us riding in some real heavy rain for about 40 minutes, but the Knights rode like the expert riders they are and everyone was fine. Rain can only dampen our clothes, but our spirits.

Will the Real Bikers Please Stand Up

by Will

The event in NYC really caught me by surprise. (And really pissed me off) I guess I was truly starting to believe that the general public were seeing us for what we really are, just normal citizens with a love for motorcycles. I was wrong. I know that from time to time, an event or two involving outlaws who happen to ride motorcycles is publicized in the press and on TV. They love alliteration like "Bikers Brawl with Base Ball Bats" or "Bikers Battle in Casinos (Hell Angels)," the TV promos ring out during the commercial breaks. "More at 11.”, but I really thought those days were over….for the most part. Again I was wrong!! (Hard to believe)
I've been riding for years, not as many as a lot of the other Palm Beach Knights, but I do get around. Most of those years have been spent right here recounting and sometimes writing about the things that are going on in my personal motorcycling world in South Florida. I thought the public had stop seeing us as "Bikers," sort of the same way Seinfeld used to say "Newman"...  those tough looking bearded riders attired all in black and bent on destroying the next town and kidnapping all their young women... I think it's time for a reality check. Who are the real bikers?
The mob of motorcyclist involved in the incident in NYC is nothing like us. Yet we still are all infected by the negative aura from them. First, for all those that are unaware, here is how it was reported:

“PICTURED: Wealthy couple attacked by wild pack of motorcyclists after harrowing 4-mile chase on the West Side Highway following fender bender turned hit-and-run — driver fled after running over biker.
Alexian Lien's Range Rover was surrounded by several bikers on the West Side Highway on Sunday. One biker apparently cut the driver off and slammed on the brakes just before the SUV bumped his rear tire. But when Lien — who was driving his wife, Rosalyn, and their 2-year-old child — stopped several bikers began to damage his SUV. Lien fled, striking one biker. But the group caught up to him and pummeled him before cops arrived.”

The commissioner said police had been monitoring the ride — loosely organized by a group that calls itself Hollywood Stuntz. He said about 1,000 riders caused chaos in Times Square last year when they showed up out of nowhere and disrupted traffic.
Police arrested 15 bikers and confiscated 55 motorcycles during incidents Sunday unrelated to the Lien attack, Kelly said. He said 68 summonses were issued.

Give me a freakin break!

Now I know that I wasn't there and there may have been circumstances that I don’t know about. I think in this case everyone can take some blame, both bikers and the car driver. Those biker should not have been riding out of formation and doing stunts on the road. The driver should have pulled over for a couple of minutes and let them just pass. Whatever happened, it was a bad event, and my heart goes out to the biker that was badly injured. My problem is the bad press that happens after.
The bikers we are all hearing about make up less than 1/10 of one percent of all motorcyclists. They are a tiny minority. Most sport bikers are decent carful riders. We used to hear about the so-called one-percenters that the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) once defined as the “outlaw element” in motorcycling. Now, its young studs trying impress everyone on sport bikes doing stunts. (Sorry I mean stuntz….oy)
That is until confrontation like this one. Are we really taking shots to our long fought for positive image by 20 something year olds???
Motorcycling is a passion, but not a crime of passion.

I've read on Motorcycles Forum messages welcoming new members with: "And welcome to the pleasant addiction."
I think that speaks volumes. ( I may start doing just that)

The terms "biker" and "motorcyclist" gets thrown around a lot. The media almost always uses the word "biker." People on the street seeing bikes go by and not familiar with the world of motorcycling, are sometimes heard to say, "There goes another biker gang like the Hell's Angels."(I promise this is true) Perhaps, in some small way, we don't mind being equated with the Hell's Angels. I know we all have a rebellious spirit. We may like the freedom of riding and the camaraderie of other riders. But most of us either ride alone or with small clubs of like-minded individuals like The Knights. We have no innate desire to separate ourselves into a lifestyle that may ultimately bring us face-to-face with disrespect from the general public or the law.

I know that motorcycling is one of the essential focuses in our lives, but it does not take us over. We join clubs to provide support and fellowship. We are both male and female, young and old, single, married, grandfathers and grandmothers, teachers, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, entertainers, bricklayers, retired persons, mechanics, plumbers and yes even Librarians -- you get the picture. We are everyday people who love to own and ride motorcycles.
Some of us call ourselves bikers. Others call themselves motorcyclists. The designation doesn't matter. Bikers are among the finest people you will ever meet. Why can’t people try to separate us from criminals and “Hot dogers “who ride motorcycles?
Take a look at the next motorcyclist you see taking off "his" helmet. You may just find that beneath that helmet is a 65-year-old grandmother of four out on a poker run to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Doesn't sound like the biker you heard about on the evening news does it.
Yes, diverse we are, but when asked, "Will the real biker please stand up," we all proudly rise collectively, glance around at each other, and smile. I’m just sayin…

10th Annual Run to the Heartland
Turn out to be a perfect day. A little longer of a ride, but the weather couldn't have been nicer. The festival was a little disappointing as the turnout was a lot less than previous years.
After a couple of walks around the circle, you're pretty much done. Slick did tell us about a nicer road that we took on the way there...Thanks!!

You must be Crazy to Ride a Motorcycle you are going to........
By Will

OK so here is a typical conversation we all have had with a non-biker.

Them “You have to be completely crazy or stupid to ride a motorcycle. Those #$%$@ things are dangerous!”

Me     “Yes, I know it’s dangerous. That’s one of the reason’s I like it!”
Them “you’re going to get killed, I know this guy…Blah Blah Blah… (My favorite)

Me “Thanks for that unsolicited vote of confidence and prediction of my soon to come death and dismemberment, but I try to be as careful as I can”

Right about here the conversation usually goes downhill. People telling me about how I'm going to die, seems to make me a cantankerous SOB.(more than normal)
How often have we heard that? In my case, waaaaay too often. Sometimes I give a sarcastic answer (no really I do) sometimes I try to explain how much riding means to me. Family, friends, and passionate cagers (yes, I know we are all one also) are Hell bent on saving us from our own folly. Of course to them they just think our bulbs are a bit dim. Anyone with just the slightest amount of grey matter wouldn't go near one of those two-wheeled death machines. (oy!!) “It’s too risky, I would never do it” they intone piously. (yea no shit) Why do they always shake their heads when they say this? The best is them telling me this while they're smoking a cigarette. Eh, excuse me, but….schmuck!
Alright, in a small part, they are right. There is a certain amount of peril involved in managing a motorcycle. There’s also risk involved in driving on Florida Turnpike, even in a tank. It’s purely insane to do it at night anywhere in the middle of Florida. I swear those freakin Deer are just waiting for me!! The trick is to manage the unavoidable  risks and to not take dumb and unnecessary ones.
Obviously the State of Florida agrees with me, because it is now mandatory to take a motorcycle rider course in order to get your endorsement. Keeping those mental and physical skills we learn sharp, we should actually consider practicing once in awhile. I hope to have a training day for the Knights, as soon as I can find someone qualified to do it. (no it ain't me) Many abilities can be lost in as little as six months if they aren't practiced. Knowing good cornering and curve-riding techniques doesn't do us any good if we don't practice them. (In Florida that’s not often)
It is also important to know your limits.  We must remember that some of those limits change continuously and we need to adapt our riding style to conform to them. We Florida bikers are experts at going straight, but when we hit the Mountains of Georgia, we have a big surprise coming. Last year I rode the “Gauntlet” in Northern Georgia and was surprised by my lack of skill in tight corners. With a little time and practice, I got better…not good, but better. Just watching the video" Turn of the wrist" helped, but that is no substitute to practice.
Superior riders try to not get themselves into situations necessitating superior skills. Taking dumb risks is a request for misfortune, and a never ending lecture from everyone that knows you.. If we keep pressing our limits, we will eventually be able to exceed them, and I don't think I need to write about the gory consequences. We all like to test ourselves. One example is riding faster and faster through a familiar curve. Knights, let me tell ya that can be a BAD idea. When we've pushed our grip on the road to its limits and there’s something unpredicted in the road halfway through the curve, you're in trouble and you will find yourself with a very (for guys) distinct feeling in your favorite spheres, dry mouth and an increased vocabulary. Slowing down and putting distances between us and a hazard is workable risk management. Replacing worn tires as well as picking the correct ones helps keep us securely stuck to the road. An article about Darksiding(using a car tire)  will come at another time. Not to mention TCLOCKS (wait, I just did)
Part of the challenge of motorcycling is risk management, and it wouldn't be very enjoyable if we listened to all the haters out there and surrounded ourselves with a shell of safety devices.  However, it is more fun if we don't have to worry about the dangers we generate for ourselves. I'm just sayin…..

Well we've done it!  We have reached our first anniversary. This year has gone by very fast, and we have grown enormously. Usually I would have had a party for us, but circumstances didn't allow for that(sorry). I will make up for it with a Holiday get together. It's has been driven home lately how lucky I am to have made such good friend in this club. We have been down thousands of miles of roads together and I can't wait for the thousands to come. Thank you all for making this the best club out there!!

We have been having some really awesome rides:

Always a great ride. Not too far, but some really nice roads and scenery. Both Tim's join us on this ride, it was good to see them again. After a cigar break at Holiday Park, we headed across the street to Cafe 27.
Always an interesting atmosphere. The food is good bar type stuff. The server's are always nice to look at. While sitting there a storm rolled in. We waited around for awhile, then some of us took the western route back, while the rest headed East.
Once again the Knights showed that the weather Gods love us as we avoided the brunt of any bad rain. One bonus was that Echoes got his patches sewn on!!

Viking
"Good food nice ride for a hot day-highway blast! Was great to see everyone and meet a couple of members I hadn't met before."

Punta Gorda Village Fish Market & Restaurant was cancelled, we will revisit that one at a later time.

101 Ocean, Ft Lauderadale

Greenis lead and organized this ride while I was otherwise occupied. I was told it was exactly what a nice beach ride should be. Perfect weather and little traffic.
will SAID
"Nice job Steve! Sorry I had to miss this one. I know what a great ride that is on a Sunday. We'll do it again soon."

Bike Bash Motorcycle Drag racing/Join the Knights for a day at the Races!!

A real nice event that inspired a need for speed!! We started with a great lunch at Duffy's, which was cooler and better than the food at the track. We then headed over to the PBIR. Greenies was excited by the Swap meet sign...2 tables and not much on them. We then checked out the bikes and they were impressive! I think the highlight of the day was the Spiderman bike. 196+ miles an hour in 1/8 miles.

When that bike took off, we felt it in our chest!!! A little warm, but only threatened to rain. Great time....maybe next time one of us will give it a go....maybe not.
